Glossy Swiftlet (Collocalia esculenta)
Scientific classification e
Unrecognized taxon (fix): Collocalia
Species

11, see text.

Collocalia is a genus of swifts, containing some of the smaller species termed "swiftlets". Formerly a catch-all genus for these, a number of its erstwhile members are now normally (though not by all authors) placed in Aerodramus.

Based on Rheindt et al., the Glossy Swiftlet, Collocalia esculenta, has been split into 8 species:

  • Tenggara Swiftlet, Collocalia sumbawae (sumbawae, sumbae)
  • Christmas Island Swiftlet, Collocalia natalis (monotypic)
  • Plume-toed Swiftlet, Collocalia affinis (affinis, elachyptera, vanderbilti, oberholseri, cyanoptila)
  • Ridgetop Swiftlet, Collocalia isonota (isonota, bagobo)
  • Grey-rumped Swiftlet, Collocalia marginata (septentrionalis, marginata)
  • Drab Swiftlet, Collocalia neglecta (neglecta, perneglecta)
  • Glossy Swiftlet, Collocalia esculenta (all other subspecies)
  • Satin Swiftlet, Collocalia uropygialis (uropygialis, albidior)

Remaining in Collocalia are:

An Early Miocene fossil swiftlet from the famous Riversleigh deposits of Australia was described as Collocalia buday.[1] This as well as a right ulna (MNZ S42799) found at the Manuherikia River in Otago, New Zealand and dating from the Early to Middle Miocene (Awamoan to Lillburnian, 19-16 million years ago)[2] would probably go into Aerodramus too.
